The Hudson River Environmental Society is partnering with Cornell University and the NYSDEC Hudson River Estuary Program to address the important issue of small wetlands conservation at a conference at Norrie Point Environmental Center, Staatsburg, NY.

Small wetlands are some of the most ecologically and economically valuable habitats in the Hudson Valley - but they are also one of the most threatened. Recent changes to federal jurisdiction, along with limited protection offered by state regulations, leave many small, "isolated" wetlands vulnerable to filling, draining and other impacts. As a result, local governments and individual landowners bear considerable responsibility for conserving small, isolated wetlands in the Hudson Valley.

This conference will include presentations on the science of small wetlands, including the implications of climate change; current federal and state protections; local authority; and examples of local initiatives to conserve small wetlands.
