WHO WE ARE

HRES works to facilitate and coordinate research in the physical, biological and social sciences; environmental engineering, resource management, urban and regional planning and other disciplines in the Hudson River Region. Equally important, HRES serves as a channel of communication between the research community and the researchers themselves.

HRES strives to ensure that the best possible information is available to those who must make decisions potentially affecting the environment. HRES does not take a stand on any specific issue or project.

The Society's membership includes corporate members, individuals from major academic and research institutions, consulting firms, government agencies, industries and conservation organizations concerned with environmental matters in the Hudson Valley region and interested citizens.

WHAT WE DO
Conferences and Workshops

The best known activities of HRES are its conferences and workshops on subjects of current environmental interest. HRES has organized topical meetings on such subjects as:

  • PCB's
  • Acid Rain
  • Dredging and Spoil Disposal
  • The Hudson River Fisheries
  • State Environmental Quality Review Act
  • Freshwater and Tidal Wetlands
  • Scenic and Historical Area Preservation

and many others.

These meetings draw participants from the Hudson Valley as well as neighboring states.

Symposia on Hudson River Ecology

Symposia on Hudson River Ecology were organized in 1966 and 1969 by a consortium of institutions and agencies. Since then, HRES has sponsored these symposia periodically and has published the proceedings.

Research Collections

HRES has one of the largest libraries of environmental research reports, impact statements and related materials on the Hudson River. Many of these documents were originally prepared for limited distribution and are not easily available elsewhere. Under an arrangement with Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY, the HRES Collection is available to the general public.

HRES also owns a significant collection of Hudson River photographs and related materials, primarily of historical interest, which is on permanent loan to the Franklin D. Roosevelt Library at Hyde Park.

GOALS FOR THE FUTURE

To improve the state of environmental knowledge about the Hudson River ecosystem, and to disseminate that knowledge, HRES has established the following goals:

  • To hold two conferences annually.
  • Acquire important documents not yet in the research collection.
  • Hold additional symposia on Hudson River Ecology.
  • Recognize individuals and groups who contribute significantly to the body of knowledge about the Hudson River.
  • Support environmental scholarships.

Your membership will help us realize these important goals. Join Now!
