HRES Field Trip Fall 2017:

Geological Tour of Bear Mountain and the Fort Montgomery Area

Saturday, September 23, 2017 9:45 AM – 3:00 PM

We will drive to the top of Bear Mountain to examine some of the oldest rocks in New York State and talk about the 1.3 billion year geologic history of New York. We will then visit the Fort Montgomery area next to the Bear Mountain Bridge and discuss how the geology of the Hudson Highlands affected the history of the Hudson River Valley from the earliest Native Americans through the Revolutionary War, the Industrial Revolution, and into the modern environmental movement.

The tour will be led by Dr. Steven H. Schimmrich. Dr. Schimmrich is Professor of Earth Science and Geology and is chair of the STEM Department at SUNY Ulster County Community College, at which he has taught since August 1999.  Among the courses he teaches is Geology of the Hudson Valley, a two week intensive field study of selected rock outcrops from New York City to Saratoga Springs which covers the geology and tectonic history of the Hudson Valley.
